Castor pulled the red and blue strips of cloth higher up on his face, blocking the blowing dust from entering his mouth and nose. Despite the goggles over his eyes, he couldn't see much through the dust cloud. He just had to wait a moment for it to pass. These small dust storms were common and frequent on the Martian plain, but they were also short lived.
As soon as the dust stopped blowing, he removed the goggles and strips of cloth from his face and resumed his watch over the grassland. He called it a grassland because that was the only plant that grew here. It was a monoculture of a single variety of grass used back on Earth in lawns, adapted to survive in the dry, sandy nutrient-deficient soil of Mars. It grew in small clumps, two feet wide on average and a foot and half upward at most. The clumps had spread over a rather large area since Castor had planted the first few plugs years ago.
It was his own personal ecosystem. Projects like this were happening all around New Starhaven. Scientists were trying to accelerate the terraforming of Mars by introducing plants and animals from Earth in groups as predetermined ecosystems. The goal was for the ecosystems to adapt, become self-sustaining and eventually to spread and verge with all the others.
Castor's grassland was an imitation of the African plain from Earth, if on a miniature scale. After the grass had established itself well as a food source, he introduced insects to feed on the grass. After that he introduced lizards and mice to act as predators for the insects. Then as the apex predator, he introduced cats. They didn't have much to work with, having only what was in the city of Starhaven at the time of The Blight. But it was expected that the animals from Earth would adapt and fill all of the niches of Earth's many ecosystems. It was just a matter of introducing each creature, monitoring them and giving them time to balance out in their ecosystem.
The grassland had changed quite a bit over the last few years. The difference in gravity between Earth and Mars seemed to be the biggest force for change. Within one generation, the cats, mice and lizards were growing taller, their legs and spines elongated with less weight on them. This wasn't really an adaptation. The animals were simply growing as they had on Earth but with less gravity. Castor guessed this would balance out soon enough. There hadn't been enough time for other environmental adaptations. But behavioral adaptations were in full swing. All of the animals had burrows. Mice on Earth had dug tunnels through the top soil for safe travel. But the lizards and cats had done so as well. The cats in particular had become quite sensitive to the signs of oncoming dust storms and would retreat to their burrows before the storms hit.
It was amazing really. His little ecosystem was thriving and spreading. He hadn't seen any of the cats yet on this particular expedition. He had seen the small movements of mice and lizards between tufts of grass but nothing larger.
Then he saw something. He stayed crouched so as not to disturb it. It was big, at least the size of a cat, but obscured by the grasses. It was walking around with its head down. As he watched it move, he realized it was much bigger than any of the cats that lived here. He began to grow nervous. He was aware of what other animals had been introduced to Mars and which ones might be looking for food in his grassland. The cat may be the apex predator in this micro-ecosystem. But ecosystems were often much more complicated than that.
The animal lifted its head. A dog. And it had caught his scent. It spotted him always immediately. It let out a howl and began stalking slowly forward. Within seconds, a pack of dogs were surrounding him, baring their teeth and growling. Castor had his sword as always on these expeditions. He stood and drew it, trying to look threatening. He knew he could take a few of them, but if they all jumped on him and started ripping, he didn't stand a chance.

Joyce happily rolled around in the large patch of different grasses. Nothing made her happier than living like the animals. Her cat ears twitched with every pounce on an insect. It was a very lucky find, this patch. Not many microsystems where as fun as this one. Not many had animals like this one. Cats were all over the place, so there was never running out of things to talk to. Suddenly a howl pierced the air, making Joyce’s fur bristle with excitement. Apparently there were dogs too! Dogs were always more fun to talk to than cats! Slowly, her yellow cat fur changed to a redish-orange white hue, her snout grew thinner and longer. The tail bloomed like a flower, letting more and more fur emerge until it was like a squirrels! Joyce could hardly contain her happiness. She was now a fox, her favorite animal! Without further hesitation she bolted toward the sound of the howl.
Joyce Thompson, Human Fox, dashed through the grasses. Using her large ears, she pinpointed where the dog had first called, but now, it sounded less friendly than before. Growling and low barks could be heard, but they weren't directed at her. They were directed at something else. She sniffed the air, useless. Her nose wasn’t fully developed yet, after all she was still training her powers. Joyce couldn’t help her curiosity and snuck forward until she could see a man dressed in tattered rags surrounded by a pack of ferocious dogs. Though they were only protecting their territory. If the man where to slowly exit the circle and leave the patch of grass they called home, there was a good chance that there would not be bloodshed. But the man didn’t move from his spot. No, instead he unsheathed a sword. No no no! Did this guy intend to kill these poor pups?! Joyce couldn’t allow herself to let that happen. Red fur and all, she bursted into the clearing and pushed herself into the circle of dogs to confront the man holding a weapon of death. The wild dogs seemed confused as to who this new character was standing in the middle of their circle.
“Hey you!” She yipped, still in fox form. “These dogs did no harm to ya! All they want is a home!” She realized, since she was a fox, the man would only hear her bark, not talk, but the dogs; The dogs understood her. Instead of focusing on the man to leave, Joyce turned her attention on the dogs to convince them to flee. “Hey dogs! Leave this guy! He’s gotta blade sharp enough to decapitate some heads!” The dogs seemed startled by this, for they had never seen such a creature in this grass field before, but by the sound of her voice they knew she was telling the truth. With a glare at the man, all of them slowly trickled off back into the grass. Joyce smiled to herself. So far, so good. No innocent animal blood had been spilled today by the hands of humans.

Castor stood with his sword ready. He wasn't sure if he should make the first strike or wait for one of them. He couldn't run. A chase would put the pack in their element. No, he was much safer standing his ground. They feared him, but not enough to leave him alone. Just enough to be cautious. Waiting for something to happen, Castor spotted another quick movement from the grass. It was a cat, running right up to him. No, not a cat. He hadn't seen this animal since he was a child on Earth. He had seen it in textbooks since then. A fox. What it was doing on Mars confused him greatly. He had been personally involved in many animal introductions on this planet. As far as he knew, no foxes were in the city of Starhaven when the Blight came and thus made it to Mars. Had someone brought it before the exodus from Earth, or maybe more recently.
These scientific thoughts were running through his head despite the situation. He was shaken from thought when the Fox began making a series of yipping barks in his direction. He stared at it, trying to figure out what it was doing. It then turned to the pack of dogs and make similar sounds. After a moment, the dogs stopped growling and retreated. He looked back at the fox as it watched them leave. Had it just communicated with the dogs? He supposed foxes and dogs were rather closely related. But why would the fox act in this way? It had acted to save him.
He sheathed his sword and knelt down, extending his hand. He had never interacted with a fox before but if it was anything like a dog or a cat, it might want to sniff his hand before giving any sort of trust. "You just saved me little guy." He said with a warm smile. He couldn't tell if the fox was male or female. But he supposed it didn't matter if he called it a guy, since it couldn't understand him. He knew he had just had a sword but he tried to seem as nonthreatening as possible. This was an amazing scientific opportunity. And the bonding experience with friendly wild animals was always exhilarating and satisfying to him. He wasn't sure how he could thank the fox but he hoped he could perhaps give it a pat on the head before it ran away.

Joyce felt offended. Even though she was a different animal, she could still understand her native language. Surely she looked like a girl! Oh this guy was going to get a serious lecture on animals! Cautiously, she eyeballed his metal claw of a hand, then glanced at the sheathed sword. Was this a trap? She couldn’t tell. Carefully taking a step forward she sniffed his hand, though it didn’t do much. Joyce took a step back. She felt herself grow taller, skin replaced fur, nose replaced snout. The hair on her head grew longer while clothes magically appeared on her body. Finally she was human again.
“I’m a girl,” She stated bluntly. “And you sir. Could have seriously injured those dogs.” Fully aware that her fox tail and ears hadn’t disappeared she tried to stay composed. It had been a while since she was her true self. Sadly her true self was what she despised the most. “Also! Anyone who owns a Microsystem should know the different territory of their animals! You shouldn’t of invaded their space in the first place! Don’t you know what to do if you’re surrounded?” She stopped herself before she could ramble on any farther.

The fox grew closer and sniffed his hand. He gave it a moment before taking any further action. The fox backed away and... it began to grow! It grow almost as tall as he, straightening up and standing on two legs. At the same time, the fur disappeared replaced by skin and clothing. It... was... a person. A young woman.
"I'm a girl." She said.
Castor was speechless. Before he could even begin to think of a response, the girl began scolding him about what just happened. He could hear what she was saying but it seemed insignificant compared to the fact that this girl was just a fox. He wasn't sure why it took him so long to realize it. She was a Powered-Being. A Blighted Human. He hadn't seen any since before the Anti-Powered Being Alliance came to Mars and forced them into hiding. He knew they were still here but this was the first one he had seen in a long time.
He shook his head and blinked, ending his stare. "I'm sorry." He said, apologizing for a few things. Namely, staring at her and ignoring what she was saying. He hoped she understood that what he just saw was beyond bizarre from his perspective. "Those dogs were threatening me!" He began in defense. "This is not their territory. I have personally watched over this habitat for three years and I've never seen any dogs here before. In fact, they could destroy the whole thing in a matter of days. I have every right to protect what few fragile ecosystems we have on Mars." He finished.
As for what to do when surrounded by a pack of wild dogs? What option did he have? "What would you have done differently?" He asked sincerely, a more reasonable tone in his voice now. If she really had communicated with those dogs a moment before, maybe she had some useful insight.

Joyce scoffed. “Oh please, everyone knows to back away slowly! And Running will only encourage their instinct to hunt. Don’t stare them in the eye either. They view this as a challenge.” She rambled off a couple more points of what not to do. “Also, this ecosystem isn’t yours. You might of started this masterpiece but it did all the work. It evolved into something completely different!” A faint glimmer caught her eye.
“BUG!” In a flash fox girl was upon it, completely forgetting the raggedy man. She pounced, enclosing the unsuspecting insect in her hands. With a giggle of triumph Joyce rolled around in the grass stopping only to glance at her spectacular prize.

He had hoped his change in tone would calm the situation. But she was still rather argumentative. Didn't she understand that he was here to protect the animals. He didn't want to harm the pack of dogs. He simply saw the lives of the animals in this ecosystem as more important. Dogs should never have been introduced to this planet at such an early stage. But he completely agreed that nature had done all of the work here. He wanted to defend himself more but the girl just seemed to want to tell at him. As soon as she was done, she turned and chased after a bug, catching it rather quickly.
Castor thought perhaps she would be more receptive to what he had to say at this moment. "I never said it was mine." He said in response, using a completely calm tone. He understood the girl's anger. She was more protective over the lives of these animals as he was. "Yes, I placed these animals here. But you're right. Nature has changed this little habitat into something I could never design myself. But I do intend to protect it. Those dogs do not belong here. They are rogues and they will wipe out the feline population or scare them away in a day. They have their place somewhere, but this one is not ready for them yet."
Historically, packs of wild dogs hunted large prey like deer or antelope. There was nothing like that on Mars so surely this pack had struggled to survive on the relatively barren world of Mars. They probably roamed around, scavenged what they could from the cities and villages, killed whatever they came across and moved on. In the grassland, their numbers were far too large for the prey population. The cats would have to increase tenfold before it could support this pack of wild dogs.
He turned his attention back to the girl. He didn't know if what he was saying was reaching her or not. "What brings you to this little grassland?"

"What brings you to this little grassland?"
Joyce realized she had an audience and dropped the bug. "Well, When you are being tracked down you sort of need a good place to hide. And what better of a place is there than a micro-system filled with animals you can morph into?" She looked up at her interrogator suddenly remembering something that was way off topic. "Your felines requested that if I ever run into a man wearing rags that I should say cat mint would be highly appreciated. Anyway, you should be careful. If you were worried about the dogs then I should tell you I've seen bigger animals roaming just outside the perimeters of this place. Seriously, it should be a law to put fences around the ecosystems large enough to have those animals. If they can even be called tha-"
Without warning Joyce's ears perked up. Quietly and slowly she started to retreat back on all fours into the tall grass. "You should get out of here sir." Joyce hissed, fox ears pulled back and tail swishing nervously from side to side. "It is not safe anymore." She darted back into the grass, leaving the raggedy man in her dust.
