Winston slowly trudged inside the federation building hair was greasy and his face covered in oil. Yesterday had been a slow day for Cyanprolem, Winston's cybernetic creation. The robot looked like a skeletal dog. The artificial fur he had ordered for Cyanpro had not yet come in the mail so it was stuck looking like this for a while yet. The “dog” dashed up to its creator and pounced, licking his face with its cold, metallic tongue.
“Down boy!” Winston laughed, Cyanpro complied but it was only a ruse. It nipped playfully at his red scarf and sprang about the room. Papers flew this way and that in a tiny whirlwind only to settle on the ground. “Now look what you’ve done! I’ll have to reorganize everything now!” he sighed and placed a hand on his forehead.
“The paper can wait Winnie.” Winston flinched. He only knew one person who called him by that terribly girly nickname. Jenny. He turned to see the familiar girl with short black hair pulled into a small ponytail behind her head and chocolate brown eyes rimmed by tan glasses that settled clumsily on her tiny nose. “But first you need to look presentable.” She took out a handkerchief from a pocket on her jacket and roughly wiped the oil off his face until the only evidence they ever existed where the dark splotches on the cloth. “Well, I guess it is an improvement… Oh well, no time to lose.” She grabbed the scarf around his neck and pulled it taughnt, almost cutting off his air supply. “Follow me.” With that she pulled him through a different set of doors like a dog on a leash.
“C-Careful!” Winston gently loosened Jenny’s grip on the makeshift leash. “This is my favorite scarf!”
“Oh please. You have like, twenty replicas!” She let go but continued to walk.
Winston followed. “Well, it may not look the part but this one has value.”
“Whatever. Just keep up the pace will ya?” Winston quickened his walk until he was right beside her.
“Where are we even going?” He asked.
“Laster asked for you, don’t know why and don’t care why.” The redhead stopped cold in the hallway. Laster? Laster hated him! Why would that grumpy old scientist want with him?
“Oh quit being such a pansy!” Jenny rolled her eyes and dragged him closer to their destination. “The past is the past, Only you remember what happened!” Still, Winston couldn’t move his legs and Jenny was forced to practically carry him to Laster’s lab.
“Here! Now move!” With one last burst of energy she shoved him through the door.
“Bout’ time Jenivieve! I swear…” Laster was a short man in his late sixties early nineties, Winston didn’t really know, and wore a tattered yellowing lab coat that had multicolored chemical splotches, probably from failed experiments. His hair was an angry forest of white and black, making him look crazier than he already was.
“Stop being a pansy!” Jenny repeated, lowering her voice so only Winston could hear. With another violent shove from the girl he toppled over and landed hard on his knees.
“Jenivieve! Stop bullying the kid!” Kid? Last time he checked Jenny was two years younger than him. “Anyway, Winnie my boy.” Winnie… “Have I got a proposition for you!” The stout man helped him up from the tiled floor. “As you may know already, there are many planets in the solar system that can support some type of life. Many like earth, others? Not so much.” He must be referencing the Sowdaha planet, where life thrives in darkness and cold instead of warmth and light. “Jenivieve! What are you still doing here! Go fetch the others!” Laster paused long enough for her to exit the room. Others? “Anyway, I have a hypothesis, it’s about the evolution of different planets and its inhabitants. I am old, fragile you could say, so I need able bodied young-ins like yourself that know what they’re doing. In short, I need you to collect data on the different planets. Keep in mind, It’s very risky business. You don’t know if it will be Hostile or Friendly, Rebels or APBA, stay away from them rebels… Everyone wants space property. As the old saying went, Who owns the most controls the most!” The crazy man laughed. “Ah well. SO! Whadaya say Winnie?” Winnie… Winston knew this wasn’t a question, it was a command. Old Laster had enough dirt on him to get him fired from the only job he knew how to do. This guy had it out for him on day one… With no other option, Winston said the only thing he could say.
“...Sure…”
Laster smiled, crooked yellow teeth glistening. “Great Great! Now all we need are the others! But let’s get you situated right now!” He whipped out a remote and pressed the only button on it. The wall behind him slowly moved up to reveal a monstrous intergalactic travel spaceship. Winston gaped at the sight of. Of. He looked for the name. SS Galactica. Very original… Still he was impressed all the same. “THIS Beaut is equipped with indoor food plots, tree farms (For oxygen), Scrap fields, wasteland, it’s half the size of PLUTO!” Winston’s heterochromic eyes widened at that bluntly stated fact.
“Put Pluto is- is 736.9 miles around!”
“I know! Isn't that MAGNIFICENT! Now! On you go! I shall send the others up if they accept, if they do not however, I’ll shoot you up there alone.” Winston swallowed hard. Alone? In the vast void of space? What had he gotten himself into...
